Day Tripper: Kinderhook Village
Walking through Kinderhook is like you’ve stepped into a scene in Gilmore Girls - the gazebo in the town square, the local shops, beautiful landscape with of restored buildings and mature trees. Just under 30 minutes from Albany, the Village of Kinderhook has the look and feel of your favorite American town.
Arrive in the morning and let your nose lead you to the freshly made bagels at Broad Street Bagel Co. - our recommendation, the maple bacon cream cheese! On Saturdays, stroll through the Farmer’s Market for your weekly local shopping, or if you prefer to pick your own produce head over to Samascott Orchards for pick-your-own fruits and vegetables throughout the season. If you’re feeling fancy (or adventurous) while picking fruit, rent their bicycle surrey with the fringe on top to make it a day you won’t forget. If pick-your-own isn’t your scene, Samascott’s Farm Store is open year-round for local produce, delicious homemade ice cream, and more.
For art-goers, The School, a Jack Shainman Gallery has incredible exhibits and is open to the public on Saturdays from 11am-6pm.
If you’re a self-proclaimed historian or appreciate history lessons you have a cornucopia of historic buildings and famous tales right here. The 8th US President, Martin Van Buren was born in Kinderhook and later resided at his treasured estate, Lindenwald, following his days as President. Part of the National Park System, Lindenwald boasts beautiful walking trails and guided tours of the home to experience the history that happened here. For a glimpse into the Dutch heritage of Kinderhook and the Capital Region explore The Columbia County Historical Society’s homes/properties from as far back as 1737.
Don’t forget to top off your day with a cheese board and one of 150 craft beer selections at Kinderhook’s newest shop, Saisonnier. Or if cheese isn’t your thing, pop into Dyad Wine Bar, with excellent small plates and wine choices, or The Flammerie, a farm-to-table wood-fired bistro, for an experience the NYC weekenders venture to town for.
